The Burning Question

The burning question that most friends are asking me right now is:

With all the chaos that COVID-19 has caused, will you still move to Spain in August?

To be honest, that’s the question that I’m asking too.

Although I love data and statistics, I won’t bore you by repeating the numbers that you’ve already read.  As you know, the coronavirus is spreading quickly, and countries are making unprecedented decisions to protect their citizens.  In Spain, these decisions have included several weeks of government-mandated self-isolation; the U.S. government, likewise, has strict travel restrictions in place.  If I tried to return to Spain this week, it would be nearly impossible.

Thankfully, my plan was not to return to Spain this week; my plan was (and is) to return in early August, which is still 4 and a half months away.  Several people reminded me this weekend that a lot can happen in four months.  Four months ago, we were not scared of the coronavirus, and I pray that we won’t be scared four months from now.  And so, to answer the burning question, I still plan to move to Spain in August.

A.W. Tozer writes in The Pursuit of God:

Everything is safe which we commit to Him, and nothing is really safe which is not so committed.

For now, all that I can do is commit my plans to Him and trust Him to work out the details (Psalm 37:5).   All I can do is believe that God did not make a mistake when He gave me a desire to teach in Spain.  All that I can do is remember that God has a track record of faithfulness.  All I can do is rest in the knowledge that He is a perfect, unchanging God.
